In Their Own Words: Paul & Magdalene

Recently, Magdalene and Paul, co-founders of the Little Angels Centre, were asked to briefly explain who they were and why they chose to establish an orphanage. On behalf of them both, this was Paul’s response:

We are committed Catholics.

We, Paul and Magdalene, started the Little Angels
Centre in the year 2001. It came about as a result of
our strong desire to do something, however little, to
at least a tiny number of the many abandoned orphans
and other scavenging destitute children found around
our little township of Makutano. AIDS has turned too
many children into orphans. Our Christian faith
obliged us to act despite our own poverty, and
discouraging words from most of our neighbours, and
friends who regard these little children as thieves.
We therefore wanted to give some protection to these
children from child labour and other abuses which are
common here.

PAUL:
I am an ex-seminarian. I got my secondary
education at St. Paul Minor Seminary in Nyeri. I have
a diploma in Teaching and Religious Studies. After
leaving the seminary I joined Kiganjo Police Training
College
. I served my country as a policeman for seven
years. I decided to quit the police force so as to be
freer for something which would fill my life better.

MAGDALENE:
She is an ex-nun, a temporary member of the
Precious Blood Sisters. She left the congregation
before perpetual vows due to family problems. She has
a diploma in Social Service and Business Management.
After leaving sisterhood, she studied at Nyeri
Cathedral Secretarial College
. It was during this
course that we met and knew each other. After her
graduation, she served at St. Mary
’s Village - Sagana,
a home for abandoned old and sick women, run by the
Consolata Fathers. It was during this service that we
got married at Sagana Catholic Church. ------- We have
been blessed with three children and many orphans of our
centre.

May God bless you for your special effort for our
little ones.
